From VB6 to a modern C# platform

Gaining an overview of an existing codebase in order to implement bug fixes and migrate from VB6 to a modern C# platform.

Challenge

A legacy codebase in VB6 and Turbo Pascal without version control or automated tests made bug fixes risky and slowed the migration to a modern C# platform.

My role

Software Developer, System Designer. I was responsible for or carried out the following:

  • Establishing DevOps and version control for the existing source code.
  • Implementation of bug fixes and customer support.
  • Unit tests with xUnit.

Solution

The codebase was put under version control with Azure DevOps, mapped and documented, and the first unit tests with xUnit were introduced. In parallel, bugs were fixed and customers supported on the existing solution.

Outcome

An overview of the codebase, safer bug fixes and a concrete basis for migrating to C#/.NET step by step.
